Eight years in the making, the 1948 Ford F-5 COE Airstream camper defies convention with a build so audacious it feels like a fever dream sculpted from steel and aluminum.
Start with the foundation: a 1948 Ford F-5 COE cab, extended and mounted on a General Motors P30 chassis. The choice of a COE—where the driver sits perched above the engine—gives it a commanding, almost nautical presence, like a ship’s bridge on wheels. Rather than a standard truck bed, the builder grafted on polished aluminum bodywork from an Airstream trailer, creating a seamless transition from industrial grit to retro-futuristic shine. The result is a vehicle that measures roughly 30 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 10 feet tall.

Power comes from a 454ci Chevrolet V8, paired with a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. This isn’t a racecar engine but a workhorse, tuned with Holley Sniper EFI and Sanderson headers for reliability over flash. It’s enough to haul the camper’s considerable mass with confidence, whether cruising highways or navigating backroads. The GM P30 chassis, equipped with air suspension and front disc brakes, ensures a smoother ride than you’d expect from a vehicle born in the Truman era.

The cabin wraps you in rich brown leather seats that perfectly offset the metallic glint of the interior walls, while the walk-through layout flows seamlessly from the driver’s cockpit to the living space. A Vintage Air climate control system keeps the temperature just right, while a Pioneer touchscreen head unit—complete with a backup camera—sneaks in a dose of modern flair.
