Mike G of mike.g.concepts has created a digital design that takes the BMW 2002 Turbo and turns it into an electric machine called the i2002 Turbo. This CGI project draws directly from the original car that helped define BMW performance in the 1970s while adding the powertrain of a future M model.
From the front, the 2002 Turbo’s design is very consistent, with its round headlights resting roughly where you’d expect them to. A crisp white finish is combined with M Motorsport bits and bobs along the flanks, giving the coupe a beautiful, clean appearance. Wide fenders give the car a grounded posture that recalls the original’s flared arches in a way that is more of an homage than a ripoff. What I mean is that it retains the tiny two-door design that made the 02 series so popular when it initially debuted.

Things become a lot more interesting as you move to the back. Sharp LED lighting and a more steeply sloped bottom portion turn up the heat, replacing the original 1970s car’s gentler lines with something far more modern. The rear end appears to be a conscious statement, in contrast to the heritage front end, which Mike G claims was an intentional design choice. The front keeps faithful to its roots, while the back focuses on electric power and the performance bump that comes with it.
Under the hood is a quad-motor electric setup based on the M3 Neue Klasse, which is right around the corner. The output, a massive 1,000 horsepower, is a far cry from the original turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which could only produce 170 horsepower. When you consider the immediate torque delivery from four motors, combined with the car’s very low weight, it entirely changes the script on what it was like to drive the original.
You have to remember how rare the original 2002 Turbo cars were when they were new. From 1973 to 1975, just 1,672 of them were produced. However, they did set a precedent as Europe’s first production turbocharged engine, paving the way for succeeding M models. The i2002 Turbo idea is a way to preserve that history while also imagining what the same car would look like in a modern electric shell, and the result is a small, compact coupe that appears to be ready for anything from a peaceful cruise to a high-speed explosion.
