Imported from Japan years ago as a passenger hauler, this 1994 Toyota HiAce Grand Cabin received a second life as a self sufficient traveler thanks to clever conversion work. Power comes from a 2.8 liter naturally aspirated four cylinder diesel engine rated around 83 horsepower. An automatic transmission sends drive to all four wheels through a part time system that includes a sub transmission for low range gearing when the going gets rough.
A 1.5-inch lift provides a slightly taller stance, and 15-inch custom wheels are wrapped in a pair of Toyo Open Country all-season tires. These can tackle pavement and light trails with ease. The car has also had substantial maintenance at around 262,000 kilometers; any critical systems have been thoroughly addressed. The timing belt and tensioner pulley were replaced, along with the water pump, several idle pulleys, left and right engine mounts, alternator, and fuel injection pump. The radiator, hoses, exhaust, suspension, and fuel system were also repaired, and the car is now powered by brand new batteries. They even have a dedicated charger to keep them fully charged and ready to go.

The interior has just been retrimmed in plush maroon leather with quilted stitching, which extends from the dash to the back rows. The center console has also been renovated with some excellent wood and a set of metal cup holders. The steering wheel has been replaced with a gorgeous uncommon brown leather Italvolanti Corsa spec, and there are even brown checkered floor mats to make the space feel truly distinctive.
Rear room has a few goodies up its sleeve, such as the fridge, an Engel 40-litre unit that will keep your food fresh while on the trip. Or the wall-mounted television, which pairs with built-in speakers and a carefully tuned air-conditioning system to provide all of the comforts of home on those downtime days. The seats will fold flat to form a big bed (or anything else you want to do with them). Navigation is handled by a high-end Panasonic Japanese system with Bluetooth and an infrared backup camera, allowing you to park in even the darkest of conditions.
Work on the conversion focused heavily on the back of the van, as the trunk area has been transformed into a true private bathroom, separate from the rest of the vehicle and complete with its own door. You have a small white and pink sink with some storage to keep things organized. Showering is a breeze owing to some meticulously re-plumbed hot water lines, as well as some creative use of the existing heat exchanger. You even get a nice new faucet and some fresh gaskets and o-rings for good measure. If you’re parked and it gets chilly, simply turn on the FF heater, which will cheerfully keep you warm without running the engine. To top it all off, the electrical systems have been programmed to automatically switch to an external power source if one is attached, in case you end up parked for an extended period of time.
