2026 Jeep Cherokee Reveal
The Cherokee is back and it’s not what you’d expect from a nameplate that’s synonymous with rugged trails and off-road grit. This 2026 model comes with a hybrid powertrain, a bigger body and a cabin that feels like a luxury lounge not a backwoods explorer.

This Cherokee is bigger—188.1 inches long, 83.6 inches wide, 67.5 inches tall and a 113 inch wheelbase. That’s 4.7 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2 inches taller than the previous model. The 6.4 inches of extra wheelbase means more room inside but second row legroom takes a surprising hit, down 1.8 inches to 38.5 inches. Still there’s plenty of headroom and more shoulder and hip space making it feel open and airy. Cargo capacity is the real winner, up 30% to 33.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 68.3 cubic feet with the seats folded—enough to haul gear for a weekend adventure or a big shopping trip.

Powering this beast is a new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system, 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. Two electric motors and a 1.08-kWh battery work with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission to send power to a standard four-wheel-drive system with a rear-axle disconnect for better fuel efficiency. The result? 37 mpg combined, 42 mpg city and 33 mpg highway and over 500 miles on a tank. Not the quickest—0 to 60 in 8.3 seconds—but the torque kicks in early and it feels responsive for daily driving.

The exterior design pays homage to the Cherokee’s past while being modern. A slim seven-slot grille and rectangular LED headlights are a nod to the boxy XJ from decades ago but the angular bodywork, flush door handles and 17- to 20-inch wheels with Nexen or Pirelli all-season tires give it a sharp look. The rear liftgate with taillights inspired by jerry cans and a blacked-out license plate recess is a nice touch. It’s built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform which keeps it stable but adds 420 pounds to the curb weight to 4,295 pounds—a 420-pound increase over the previous model. Towing capacity is 3,500 pounds down from before but off-road capability is still strong with 8 inches of ground clearance and best-in-class approach (19.6 degrees) and departure (29.4 degrees) angles.

Step inside and the Cherokee feels like it’s going after the higher-end crowd. The cabin mirrors the Wagoneer S’s upscale vibe with a square steering wheel, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A rotary gear selector and small Selec-Terrain switch (Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud) keep the center console clean and functional. Physical buttons are minimal with most controls through the screen, though dedicated climate controls and a few vehicle function buttons remain. The interior is eco-friendly with leather swapped for Capri vinyl with a unique perforation pattern on the Overland trim and recycled materials in the headliner, carpeting and trim.

Every Cherokee comes with a 10-year Connect One subscription for over-the-air updates, automatic emergency calls and smartphone app integration. Standard safety features include active driving assist (adaptive cruise control with lane centering), automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection and rear park assist with emergency braking. Optional extras like 360-degree camera, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, digital rearview mirror and foot-activated power liftgate add to the versatility. The Uconnect 5 system also has an AppMarket for in-car apps like Geocaching or Sudoku, plus options for Wi-Fi hotspots and off-road data.

Off-roaders will appreciate the standard Jeep Active Drive I 4×4 system which pairs with the Selec-Terrain modes to tackle different terrain. While the Trailhawk trim (coming later) will likely bring more rugged upgrades, the current setup is solid for light off-roading. The 18.8-degree breakover angle and 8-inch ground clearance can handle moderate trails but it’s clear this Cherokee is more urban comfort than hardcore wilderness runs.

Prices start at $36,995 for the base Cherokee with a $1,995 destination fee, $39,995 for the Laredo, $42,495 for the Limited and $45,995 for the Overland. That’s competitive but not cheap—2026 Toyota RAV4 (236 hp, 38 mpg) and Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (231 hp, 38 mpg) offer more power for similar or lower prices. The Limited and Overland trims will hit dealers in late 2025, the base and Laredo in early 2026, all built in Toluca, Mexico.
