Ricardo UK is best known for their cost-effective special vehicles for the world’s armed forces, whether it be bespoke concepts or an adaptation of existing automotive platforms, they ensure it meets the required in-field serviceability. Their latest project militarizes the Ford Ranger, and can be equipped with a 2.0-litre EcoBlue Bi-turbo diesel powertrain generating 210-horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, mated to an advanced new 10-speed automatic transmission.
The most important features for safety include a rollover protection system, ring-mounted weapon system, an armored ballistic underfloor, armored glass, lightweight heavy-duty front / rear bumpers, skid plates for the radiator / powertrain / fuel tank, rock sliders, NATO IRR paint/camouflage and a 4-point seat harnesses. Plus, its 24V electrical system is enhanced to provide the power requirements and EMC protection expected of modern defense vehicle applications, while the chassis can be equipped with upgraded springs, dampers, brakes, heavy-duty wheels as we;; as all-terrain tires.
To make this vehicle a reality, Ricardo has worked closely with Polaris Government and Defense, especially for support in the areas of onboard power management and C4i (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence) integration. There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the six-figure range.
