London might not feel like the center of the next big thing in aviation, but AltoVolo is about to shake things up. The startup, tucked away in those London tech corridors, has just unveiled the Sigma, a hybrid aircraft designed for three that you could actually use to shrink the distances between you and the world, all without the cacophony of a helicopter.



It was founded by Will Wood, a serial entrepreneur who spent years working on electric vehicles, and he’s brought together a team of engineers who’ve tried out scale models in wind tunnels and the great outdoors. Wood got the idea from watching the same old traffic congestion and private jets sitting idle on the tarmac for years. Sigma is his answer: a machine that can plonk itself down on a driveway or rooftop and be ready for anyone who treats flight as just another part of their daily routine.

Wood started building his core team after realising there were gaping holes in the market during his time at other electric vehicle and aerospace firms. One of his first hires was an aerodynamics specialist from a Formula 1 simulator outfit, and he brought with him the tools and expertise to let the team run thousands of virtual flights before they even got to building a prototype. Another, a propulsion expert who’d worked on a drone delivery project, focused on finding a way to combine batteries with fuel, so you could go further than you could with batteries alone. AltoVolo’s whole approach is very much low-key and lean. They are not looking for large investment rounds; instead, they are focusing on rapid prototypes and gathering client input from the start. By mid-2025, their scale model had been put through its paces in real-world flight testing over fields, demonstrating that the basic lift and tilt mechanisms worked as expected.

But when it came to scale testing, the team found some surprises – notably that they’d need to refine the tilting mechanism to make sure the electric motors weren’t straining during hovers. It turned out it was all about getting the thrust to shift smoothly from vertical to forward. At the other end of the range, noise measurements were significantly lower than planned, at 65 decibels at 100 meters during takeoff, hardly louder than a conversation. That’s significant since it means you can use the Sigma in the heart of the city without worrying about noise complaints. Pilots who tested the simulator said the controls felt direct and immediate, similar to driving a sports car, thanks to fly-by-wire technology that smoothed out turbulence. And each time the team tweaks something, they just get more and more confident that the Sigma can handle real-world conditions without drama.

Dimensions-wise, the Sigma is designed to be pretty practical. It stretches to 13 feet long, and is 16 feet wide when the wings are unfolded, but it packs down to a neat 7 feet for stashing in the garage. Height is 5 feet, low enough to fit under most home awnings. It’s also light, with a max takeoff weight of 2,160 pounds and room for three people or a 595 pounds payload. That makes it ideal for areas where helicopters are typically dominant, such as boat decks or apartment helipads. With the flip of a switch, the folding wings lock into place with hydraulic assistance, transforming a sprawling flyer into something you can tow behind a conventional SUV. And for those tricky terrain or smooth surface circumstances, the ground clearance adjusts automatically to ensure that everything runs smoothly as possible.

Power comes from 8 separate motors, each housed in its own little compartment called a nacelle, cranking out a total of 1,608 horsepower. Batteries do the heavy-lifting for vertical take-offs, letting you stay aloft for 18 minutes on electric power alone. Once you’re up in the air though, a liquid-fuel generator kicks in to make things more efficient, stretching your range out to 510 miles in total, or a straight 260 miles on pure electric. You’ll cruise at a comfy 220 miles per hour, with short bursts of speed up to 290. The max altitude is 10,000 feet, which should be enough for most short hops around the region without needing an oxygen mask.


Forward flight completely changes the game though. The nacelles tilt forward, and thrust ducts kick in to send you climbing up for a smooth ride. Cabin pressure stays nice and even, while active noise cancellation hums along in your headphones, which are actually built into the headrest. You get a little tone that informs you how much power you’re applying to the propellers; it’s like having your own personal engine management system without having to look down. There’s also some nifty vibration dampening going on, adapted from luxury vehicle seats, so everything remains as smooth as silk. Passengers in the back get to look out at the view from the curved glass, while the pilot up front has got a wrap-around display showing the terrain in real-time. At speed, the world down there blurs into a mess of patterns and cities start to look like they’re connected by veins on a map.

They’ve got safety down to a science from the start, complete with triple-redundant controls so even if one wire goes down, you won’t be grounded. The thrust vectoring adjusts in the blink of an eye to keep you steady in the hover even if the wind picks up. And if things get really extreme, there’s a ballistic parachute they can deploy at 50 feet to gently float the whole thing down to the ground. And don’t even get me started on what happens if one of the motors fails; it simply reroutes electricity and continues to operate as if nothing is wrong. They’ve also got Embention’s autopilot system, which has been proven on drones and can handle routine flights or help out in bad weather, and of course you’ll still have a licensed pilot up front. They’re using the light-sport rules to make getting certified in the US pretty easy, and they’re following suit in Europe and the UK with their audits all lined up for 2027.

Pricing begins at 863,200 pounds, or almost $1.1 million, placing the Sigma firmly in the premium category, alongside your ordinary private aircraft. That price buys you the base model; if you want any customizations, you’ll have to pay an additional 10 to 20%. Orders commenced in July 2025, and they promised to fill the first batch fast. Delivery deadlines are pushed back to the end of 2027 pending a few last tests and regulatory approvals. In the interim, they have a high-fidelity simulator that allows you to fly the thing remotely before you get your hands on it.
