It’s not everyday that you see a Toyota Hilux, much less one with six wheels. Arctic Trucks specializes in building these custom vehicles, called the AT44 6×6, all of which are based on the Toyota Hilux. This isn’t a simple process either, as the truck needs to be completely disassembled first before 80% of the frame is replaced and 20% rebuilt.
Once the frame is finished, the team begins to add other modifications as necessary, all powered by 3.0L Diesel Common Rail engine, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all wheels. Operating in sub-zero temperatures meant that the team also had to modify the engine to run on jet fuel, which won’t freeze, even in temperatures as low as -75° Fahrenheit, complete with a 198-gallon fuel tank. It rides on 44-inch tires with a soft sidewall in case of flex during travel and are coated in a special compound to ensure they don’t crack at -40° Fahrenheit.
