Here’s a fascinating look back at the Ford Airstream concept, which was revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 7, 2007. If the design looks familiar, that’s because this retro-futuristic crossover was designed in collaboration with Airstream, the company best known for its iconic aluminum travel trailers.
The most striking feature is its fuselage-like shape finished in a reflective paint that mimics aluminum, complete with 12 ceremonial rivets as a nod to Airstream’s construction heritage. Power comes from a plug-in hydrogen hybrid fuel cell system called HySeries Drive that runs on electric power at all times, with the fuel cell acting as a generator to recharge a 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack. It offered 25 miles of pure electric range, extending to 305 miles with a full hydrogen tank, and boasted a combined fuel economy equivalent of 41 mpg.
