LEGO Technic Dodge Viper GTS-R Sports Car 42234 Set
Dodge never made another Viper quite like the GTS-R. Chrysler showed the race car at Monterey in 1995 as a limited GT weapon for the world’s endurance circuits. Bob Lutz called it a no-holds-barred competition car. An 8.0-liter V10 made more than 700 horsepower in race trim. Oreca prepared the European cars. Side pipes returned from the original RT/10. By 1998 the GTS-R had a class win at Le Mans. In 1999 Vipers locked out the first six places in class at the same race. In 2000 an Oreca entry won the Rolex 24 at Daytona outright, outlasting prototypes and the Corvette C5-R. That is the car LEGO chose for Technic set 42234.

Set 42234 contains an impressive 805 pieces and costs $64.99. You should be at least ten years old to start building on it. This finished model measures little more than 3 inches high, 11.5 inches long, and 5 inches wide, with a 1:16 scale. If you follow the written instructions or use the LEGO Builder app, which allows you to see the model in 3D while you build, you can expect to spend a few hours building, depending on your level of experience and how much time you spend admiring your work.

This Viper model’s white exterior features two blue stripes that span from front to back. The black wheels fit beautifully into the arches. The back features a large rear wing with its own blue stripe and a black tail panel with the word ‘VIPER’ in bold red letters. There’s also a diffuser on the front bumper. Even when viewed from a distance, it is beginning to resemble a Viper. Some of the nuances are addressed with stickers, which some people will likely notice.

When you remove the hood of this Viper, you’ll understand why this particular set was put together. Under that hood, ten small pistons move up and down on five disks. That’s a functioning V10 engine in plastic, and it’s not a horrible piece of engineering even at this scale. If you roll the back wheels, you’ll see how the action is carried through the rear differential and back into the disks, causing the pistons to move up and down. That’s a fairly incredible amount of detail for a car this size, considering most Technic sets at this scale leave out that much engine theater. The clever bit is how the designers fit the steering shaft down between the two rows of cylinders, as the crank disks had already taken up the most of the space underneath the hood.

On the roof, there is a small knob that allows you to turn the front wheels, which you might consider a “hand of God” control. All of the doors open, as does the hood… and that’s it. According to the official mechanical list, that is all you get here, as there is no independent suspension or gearbox. To be honest, this is a display-and-play automobile rather than a show-stopping model with all the bells and whistles, and at $65, I believe you should be fine with that.

The box art provides you a sneak glimpse at what you can do with this kit, with images of the hood up, the wheels rotating, and even a shot of the genuine Viper livery in Forza Horizon 6, which you may recall is the game where LEGO sets employ custom paintjobs. Inside the box, you’ll discover instructions and a code for applying the livery to your in-game Viper, however you’ll need a copy of Forza Horizon 6 to do so. The same goes for the Ferrari 488 Pista set 42235, which arrived on the same day.
