Porsche just opened a new door into factory-backed racing with the 911 Challenge, a track-only car built from the current 911 GT3 and priced at $275,000 including import and delivery to the United States. That figure lands well below the 911 GT4 R and the latest 911 Cup, which is why Porsche is calling it the most affordable competition car in its current lineup. The car is aimed at the 2027 season of Porsche one-make series and also at private track days later that year.
A 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, based on the 911 GT3 model, produces 508 horsepower at 8500 rpm and still redlines at 9000 rpm. Power is routed through the same seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission as the road-going GT3, so you can leave it in auto or use the paddle shifters. Porsche installed a modified muffler that retains the catalytic converter but removes the particulate filter, which is one of the reasons you won’t be able to drive this car on the road.

The dry weight is 1450 kilograms (or 3197 pounds), which includes a passenger side ballast plate and the narrow tires used for transportation. Body panels and overall proportions are carbon copies of the normal GT3, so the familiar silhouette is immediately comparable to the road-going vehicle. Porsche has included a mechanically adjustable rear wing with four settings to choose from, quick-release hood pins, an FIA rain light, and a three-jack air system to help your pit crew get the car up in the air for tire changes quickly. 18-inch wheels with the 5-bolt pattern eliminate the center locks in favor of racing slicks. Brakes consist of 380 millimeter steel disks front and back, the same as those used in the GT4 R program, and are powered by four piston calipers.
Underneath is a motorsport-tuned suspension curve, an anti-roll bar with three settings, and a racing bucket with a six-point harness inside a welded FIA cage. The carpet sound deadening and most trim have been removed, but air conditioning remains (a good touch in my opinion) and the GT3 RS steering wheel has been filled with all sorts of extra features for your racing demands. You also get a real 110-liter FIA FT3-rated fuel tank, while retaining access to adjustable ABS, traction control, stability control, and multi-stage Torque Vectoring Plus, as well as a fire suppression system as standard.
Beginning in 2027, this beast will be eligible to compete in Porsche Challenges and Trophies around the world. If you’re in North America, this includes the Sprint and Endurance Challenger series, as well as the new Sprint Trophy events organized by the Porsche Club of America and the Porsche Owners Club. If you put your money down on the first season entries, you get first dibs. Porsche designed this vehicle to share as many factory GT3 components as feasible, so spare parts bills and running expenses will be lower than if you went with something more specialized, such as the Cup or GT4 R cars.
Orders are currently open for the 2027 one-make racing season. Later that year, Porsche will begin selling cars to owners who only want a good track toy, as opposed to the whole championship package. For anyone who is already familiar with a current GT3 on the track, this has just become much more accessible and cost-effective.
