
Charging times have been a big stumbling block to electric vehicles gaining traction among the typical driver. A standard charge at most public stations still takes 20 to 40 minutes to increase the range enough to allow you to travel that long distance. Meanwhile, a gas-powered car can fill up in 5-10 minutes, giving you a tank that can run hundreds of miles without needing to stop again, but Geely has just demonstrated a potential approach to close the convenience gap.
The Lynk and Co division tested their latest battery technology with a 95 kilowatt hour pack called the Energee Golden Brick, and here’s what they discovered: they were able to charge the battery to 70 percent in under 4 minutes and 22 seconds, up from 10 percent. It takes around 5 minutes and 32 seconds to reach 80 percent, and it takes slightly more than 8 minutes and 42 seconds to reach 97 percent.

These results outperformed BYD’s most recent comparable testing by around 38 seconds on the 10 to 70% run and 18 seconds on a full charge to 97 percent. The power delivery, however, is what truly sets it apart. During a charging session, the battery’s peak output reaches approximately 1100 kilowatts. Even when it’s 75% charged, it still manages to draw more than 500 kilowatts, and even at 97%, it still draws 350 kilowatts. That is significantly more than most European and North American electric vehicles have ever seen.
The secret is a 900-volt electrical system combined with high-capacity charging stations. This system allows for a continuous flow of power, and the design distributes the current across more durable connections and better cooling routes, preventing the cells from overheating under load. It’s not just the speed that impresses: according to the testing, a 5-minute stop can increase your range by 2 km per second, resulting in more than 600 km of driving distance in perfect conditions.
As a result, drivers can begin to view public charging as just another fuel stop, rather than a long detour to be avoided. As range anxiety fades, you may discover that you don’t dread those stops as much as you do waiting in line for your morning coffee. The only thing preventing these speeds from taking off is infrastructure, as the number of high-power charging stations in the real world remains low, and Geely still has some ground to make up on BYD in terms of total number of locations.
