Nissan Skyline GT-R owners like reminiscing about the 2-door coupe models that dominated tracks and streets in the 1990s. To be honest, few of them recall that there was a sedan version available with the same, dare we say, fierce capabilities. Autech, Nissan’s high-performance arm, took on this project in 1998 to commemorate the Skyline’s 40th birthday.
People received their first good glimpse at the automobile at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show. Engineers took the R33 Skyline base and converted a conventional 4-door body into a full-fat GT-R. The rear doors and fenders were somewhat modified to match the coupe’s strong, boxy looks. The team hand-formed the new panels to ensure that everything came together snugly; a smaller front spoiler and no rear wing gave the sedan a much cleaner, more basic look than its 2-door sibling.

Under the hood, they installed the RB26DETT 2.6-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine, which produced a solid 276 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 271 pound-feet of torque at 4,400. Now, we realize those estimates are based on a voluntary agreement among Japanese manufacturers, but in most cases, the engine produced somewhat more power than that in real-world driving. A 5-speed manual transmission sent power to all four wheels using the ATTESA E-TS system, which could redistribute engine torque on the fly to ensure maximum grip regardless of the conditions.
The suspension was identical to the coupe, with multilink setups front and rear, and the Brembo brakes with ventilated discs brought the car to a confident halt every time. With 17-inch wheels and 245/45 tires, you knew this was a car designed for both the track and the autobahn. The sedan weighed only 66 pounds more than the normal GT-R, allowing it to handle and accelerate like a dream.
Inside, the bucket seats and steering wheel were the same as in the coupe, but the rear passengers had their own custom-built individual buckets instead of a back seat, which was a wonderful touch for anyone who enjoys driving fast with friends. With cloth upholstery, climate control, and a CD player, you had a reasonably nice car that went the additional mile to get the job done.
Nissan had planned to produce approximately 400 units, but ended up producing 416 in total. Where did those automobiles end up? The majority of them remained in Japan, with no official exports planned. Which is interesting, considering instances are continually appearing for sale all around the world as import regulations have altered in various nations.
One recent listing, for example, showed a high-mileage example with over 148,000 miles on the clock selling for $44,985 in the United States. Was it in good condition? The body panels and interior surfaces showed some wear, but the engine and gearbox were essentially intact. Another low-mileage vehicle with only 36,000 miles was asking a stunning $78,500, demonstrating how much a car’s condition can effect its price.
