Genesis X Gran Coupe Design Patent Turns G90 Sedan Into a Two-Door Grand Tourer

Genesis has not announced any production plans for a two-door version of its flagship G90 sedan. Yet a pair of newly granted United States design patents make the idea feel closer than ever. The filings protect the exterior shapes of the X Gran Coupe and its open-top sibling, the X Gran Convertible. Both cars first appeared as concepts at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show. The patents, issued in August 2026, show the same long-hood, rear-shifted cabin proportions that defined those show cars, now drawn with the kind of practical details that usually appear only on vehicles headed toward the road.

The coupe patent, D1,144,037, was issued on August 25 and depicts a streamlined hardtop body with a fastback roof that transitions seamlessly into a discreet ducktail spoiler. The convertible had a patent, D1,138,892, a few weeks before. Both, together with their associated paperwork, were filed in the United States in July of last year, and they claim priority over patent filings in South Korea from earlier this year. Design patents do exactly what they say on the tin, covering only the appearance rather than the mechanical components. So, for example, they have nothing to say regarding the engine, suspension, or production timeline. Nonetheless, the illustrations are incredibly realistic, with working exhaust pipes and everything. They don’t simply look like concept cars, either; the bumpers and mirrors are all production-ready, not just dream elements.

The visual language of these designs is pretty similar to what you would expect from a modern G90. The LED lights extend around the front corners, with the large Crest Grille at the center and lower bumpers on either side. The car’s stance is all about stretching out the space between the front wheel and the base of the windshield, giving it a traditional grand-touring look evocative of some of Europe’s biggest names. The rear fenders are broader than on the four-door, and the beltline sits higher and extends further before lowering into the rear deck. Out back, there are two large rectangular exhaust points located low in the bumper, with a glow of LED lights running underneath.


According to the design patents, the cars are classified as heavyweight passenger vehicles (D12/92). If you look attentively, you’ll notice multi-angle views that demonstrate how far the designers have progressed with the simple task of transforming a long-wheelbase sedan into a sleek two-door droptop. The passenger compartment has been relocated back, the roofline has been lowered, and the windshield has been raked more. It all adds up to a lower, more purposeful-looking car, without the need for a whole new platform.

The powertrain is a little more tricky because the presence of true exhaust pipes in the drawings may signal a re-use of the current G90’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6, or, of course, some type of hybrid version that would align with Genesis’ performance goals. These drawings do not appear to show any battery-electric engine technology. Seating is described elsewhere as a 2+2 configuration, which should suit the long doors and short back deck of a grand tourer.


Genesis intends to develop a two-door flagship, according to Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke, but do they have permission to do so? Obviously, there is no proof in recent design patents. We do know that vehicle manufacturers frequently patent designs that never go into production. In this situation, with all of the production-ready bits and bobs, as well as the formal submission of these patents, it all begins to look more credible, especially considering the lack of direct competition from Bentley and Aston Martin.
