Buick Electra Orbit Concept
Buick, a brand that’s all but disappeared in the US, is booming in China where it’s releasing designs that look like they came straight out of a sci-fi movie. Meet the Buick Electra Orbit Concept, which was designed by GM’s China Advanced Design Center. This electric sedan combines 1950s space-age style with modern tech to create a car teases Buick’s future.

The Electra Orbit is huge, about 20 feet long and more than 6.5 feet broad. Its body is painted in a metallic color called “Space,” and four scissor doors open out from the center of the vehicle, while the rear, boasts deployable wings rise to improve aerodynamics.

Inside, the Electra Orbit is a four-seater with a 2+2 configuration that puts comfort above capacity. The interior design entices you with earthy textures and cosmic ideas. A luminous light strip extends from the windshield to the center console, giving the illusion of a planet orbiting. This concept continues with a crystal orb in the console, ringed by two rings, and a dashboard display that animates a planetary system as the Buick emblem fades into the infotainment screen. A sweeping arch-shaped display, called the “Ring,” spans the width of the cabin, for an immersive digital experience. The squircle-shaped steering wheel suggests autonomous capabilities, while standard pedals and controls are still available for a human driver. Every element, from the red clay-inspired upholstery to the bespoke brocade patterns, feels precisely made to strike a balance between elegance and innovation.

Aerodynamics is key to the Electra Orbit’s design. To reduce drag, the hood features vents that channel air upward, a front splitter, and side skirts. A split wing and diffuser work in tandem to regulate air and downforce for stability. Even the wheel covers are engineered to keep the Buick insignia vertical, a minute element of precision. The split hood lifts to show unique luggage, evoking the grandeur of travel and making the vehicle feel like a private airplane on wheels.

GM hasn’t said much about the powertrain, only that it’s on a dedicated electric vehicle platform. That leaves room for speculation, but the lack of details suggests the Electra Orbit is more about vision than production. Stuart Norris, GM China’s vice president of design, calls it a “bold exploration” that combines Buick’s heritage with future thinking. The concept draws inspiration from iconic Buick designs of the past, like the 1950s Centurion, but pushes the boundaries with modern electric architecture.

China is the heart of Buick’s resurgence, where the brand sells sedans like the LaCrosse and Regal, minivans and SUVs, far more than in the US. The Electra Orbit joins a line of recent concepts—Electra-L, Electra-LT, and Electra GS—that show Buick’s intent to compete in China’s rapidly electrifying market. While the Electra Orbit won’t hit showrooms as is, its design elements could influence future production cars. The Xiao Yao architecture, introduced by Buick recently, supports a range of powertrains, from full electric to extended-range hybrids, so we may see some of this concept’s ideas in production cars.
