When you catch a glimpse of a sports car on the road with the razor-sharp lines of a classic Porsche 911, it’s almost an automatic double take for most drivers. This 1993 RX-7 FD3S Type RZ has the exact same look, and somehow, it just works. Finished in a vibrant orange paint, paired with 17-inch Enkei NT-03 wheels, every single panel on this thing has been modded to give it that unmistakable Porsche feel. It was initially a limited-run JDM model, and the Collecting Cars listing does not specify the price, instead directing you to contact the vendor in Rouse Hill, New South Wales.

On the front of this RX-7, the change that jumps out straight away is those pop-up headlights have been swapped out for fixed units straight off a Porsche design sheet, all snugly encased in a new bumper that tucks right into the sides. They’ve also added some smart air vents to the hood, to keep the engine bay nice and cool on those long hot drives, and the bespoke rocker panels sort of hug the sides for good measure. And to keep all four corners planted, there are skirts sealing the gaps to the road. From the back, the quarter panels flare out just a bit more, and a little fixed wing sits up top adding some downforce without going too over the top. The rear bumper is really smooth, and the taillights even have the same sleek rectangular shape as the 911’s rear. Now, I know what you’re thinking: this must be a custom job, but it’s a genuine RE Amemiya AC987 body kit, which was the mod of choice for Japanese tuners in the late 1990s.

Once you enter the cabin, it wraps around you like a cockpit. The seats are covered in red leather and have rough inlays to help you stay in place when cornering, which is useful on narrower roads. Those seats come equipped with Mazdaspeed bolsters which lend some extra support during spirited driving . All of the carbon fiber trim on the dashboard and doors is nice and weighs less, yet still has that real car feel to it. The three-spoke steering wheel points directly front of you, while air conditioning keeps things cool on lengthy travels. The Eclipse radio can be controlled with the key fob and plays music through hidden speakers.

The engine remains true to form, sticking with the original 1.3L 13B-REW rotary engine with dual sequential turbos. Power is still sent to the rear wheels via a 5 speed manual gearbox. There’s been no tampering with the engine bay; everything is exactly as it left the factory. Recently, in December 2023, Idemitsu updated the engine oil, filter, radiator fan, and motor. They also replaced the broken vacuum lines, turbo control solenoids, boost controller, and starter motor to solve frequent problems including overheating and seal wear.
