If electric vehicles can have DC fast charging, why not all-electric aircraft? Meet the Diamond eDA40. Diamond Aircraft partnered with battery technology company, Electric Power Systems, to use their Battery Module with a DC fast charging system. This means that you’ll be able to power up a fully drained aircraft in approximately 20 minutes.
The batteries will be installed in a custom designed belly pod and between the engine and the forward bulkhead, good for around 90-minutes of flight time, possibly more as battery technologies evolve. Other features on the eDA40 include a Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit while several other avionics add-ons will be available. Its expected to complete a maiden flight some time in Q2 2022, while certification should happen in 2023.
