Honda NSX-R NA2
Henry Catchpole doesn’t personally own a Honda NSX-R, but he was lucky enough to drive a 2002 NSX-R for a Hagerty video review. This car, one of only 140 NA2 NSX-Rs made, is now up for auction by Broad Arrow.

Launched in May 2002, this was the second version of the NSX Type R, after the 1992 NA1 NSX-R. Built on the updated NA2 NSX platform (from 2001), it was designed to boost performance without adding much extra power, staying true to the Type R focus on balance, precision, and driver connection.

Like the Civic Type R (EK9) and Accord Type R, the NSX-R focused on cutting weight, sharpening the chassis, and improving driver feel rather than just adding horsepower, making it a favorite for car enthusiasts. Only 140 were made (plus five NSX-R GT versions for Super GT racing), making it super rare and valuable, with prices now over $500,000 at auctions.

What makes the NSX-R’s suspension different from the standard NSX? Both the NSX-R and standard NSX use an all-aluminum double-wishbone suspension, a cool design for its time that gives great control. The NSX-R’s setup is stiffer for racing and skips power steering, while the standard NSX has softer suspension and power steering for comfy daily driving.

It’s powered by a 3.2L C32B V6 engine, naturally aspirated, with DOHC and VTEC, producing 276 hp and 224 lb·ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The NSX-R’s engine is a hand-built, finely tuned version of the standard NSX’s 3.2L V6, with parts like the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, clutch, and pulley balanced to be ten times more precise than the standard engine, improving response, smoothness, and track performance.

The NSX-R is still a top example of classic supercars, often compared to the Porsche 911 GT3 (996) and Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale for how engaging it is to drive. Originally sold for about $100,000 in 2002, NSX-Rs now go for over $500,000 at auctions due to their rarity and niche fanbase.
