Porsche has started offering its wireless charging system as a production option on the new Cayenne Electric. Drivers park the SUV over a ground plate and the car begins charging on its own, with no cable to plug in.
The system consists of two key components: a flat floor plate that plugs directly into the power supply in the garage, carport, or outdoor parking spot, eliminating the need for a separate wallbox, and a receiver unit tucked away under the Cayenne’s underbody between the front wheels, safe from road debris and the elements. When the car is parked and the parking brake is deployed, power is transferred across a distance of approximately 12 to 18 millimeters.

The engineers carefully designed the floor plate, putting the transmitter coil, control electronics, and communication hardware into a single unit that is little less than 1.2 meters long, 0.78 meters wide, and 0.06 meters high. It weighs roughly 50 kg and is designed to resist the harsh outdoors, allowing you to drive over it without destroying it. It talks with the automobile over Wi-Fi to check in and transmit status information, and you can even perform remote software updates if necessary.

Power is transmitted via inductive coupling, which involves the floor plate’s copper coil creating a magnetic field that is picked up by the receiver coil under the car and transformed into direct current to charge the battery. The system operates at an 85-kilohertz frequency and can provide up to 11 kilowatts of power. Porsche claims it delivers approximately 90% efficiency from the grid to the battery, which is comparable to a standard 11-kilowatt wallbox.

Getting the alignment right isn’t too tough. The Cayenne is equipped with smart ultra-wideband sensors and Surround View cameras to assist the driver in getting into position. There is a display beneath the car that shows a green circle for the floor plate and a green dot for the receiver; when the green dot is inside the green circle, you are ready to drive. The technology is clever enough to handle small misalignment of up to 10 cm by making adjustments on the fly. Charging begins immediately as soon as the parking brake is applied, leaving everything for the system to sort.

A few safety features kick in to guarantee that everything works properly. The system contains motion sensors that activate if it detects any living creatures beneath or around the automobile; it will promptly turn off the field. Another system monitors for any metal objects on the plate that may grow hot; both respond fast to ensure safety. To be sure, a password protection mechanism is activated during the initial connection, ensuring that only authorized cars can access electricity.
If you choose the Cayenne Electric, the system is included because the underbody receiver and preparation package will be installed at the factory. It cannot be done as an aftermarket fit because it must be part of the original construction or nothing at all. In Europe, the whole package, including the floor plate, is available at Porsche Centers and online. Prices vary by market, but in Eurospeak, they are in the several-thousand-euro range, with the whole package available for a few thousand euros or pounds.
