Owners of the Rivian R1T and R1S just received the largest software change their trucks and SUVs have ever seen. The 2026.31 update delivers RivianOS 2, the same rebuilt system that already runs on the newer R2. Every R1 on the road, whether Gen 1 or Gen 2, now shares one common software foundation with the rest of the lineup.
The most visible change is in the interface itself. Quick controls and the media player can be placed on either side of the center display. A redesigned vertical status bar keeps important vehicle information close at hand. Settings have been totally redesigned. The updated version contains context-aware menus and a global search capability, making finding a specific modification much faster. The navigation, media, and energy apps have all received new designs. Graphics take a significant step forward. The R2 and Gen 2 R1 vehicles now use Unreal Engine 5 to display real-time three-dimensional views of the truck or SUV and its surroundings on the main screen. Gen 1 models continue to run Unreal Engine 4, ensuring that older hardware feels responsive. The overall system feels faster and smoother following the upgrade.

Local authorities, reliable sources, and real-time user contributions provide the information. Drivers no longer require a separate phone app for these alerts. Connect+ subscribers get two extra tools. A specialized weather app displays current conditions, air quality, and a ten-day prediction in the central display or along a predetermined path. Mobile Live Trips enables owners to initiate, monitor, and change an active journey from the Rivian phone app, whether it is a short commute or a lengthy adventure.
The update also improves Rivian Unified Intelligence, the shared AI layer that supports voice features and select car and mobile interactions. R2 and Gen 2 R1 models acquire more local processing, resulting in faster reactions. All R1 generations get more cloud-assisted voice features and crisper driver-display layouts. Owners maintain complete control over the data. Hotword wake words, location sharing, and driver profile information can be enabled or disabled at any moment.
R2 vehicles receive a few additional things in the same release. Side mirrors can automatically tilt when reversing. When the car is secured and the keys are removed from the cabin, both glove compartments lock automatically, with manual choices available via fast controls or settings. Digital key pairing is more reliable, and an earlier issue that allowed the vehicle to lock while a digital key was still inside has been resolved.
