Solar Scooters has just released the Hyperion RST, the second model in their line of electric scooters, and it’s taking things to a whole new level by essentially stepping right into motorcycle territory. Twin 5,000-watt motors complete the job, with a combined peak output of 12,000 watts that can be activated in a heartbeat. The real kicker, however, is top speed: you can reach 70 mph on the open road. Just be prepared to offer that one your complete attention when you feel like it.
The RST is a true powerhouse, with a 72-volt, 40-amp-hour battery made of Samsung cells. If you stay to a speed of 30 miles per hour, you can expect to ride all day, covering up to 80 miles. Push harder, and the battery life may suffer; however, with the optional second charger, you’ll be back up and running in no time, or at least twice as rapidly as without it.

The brakes on this scooter are pretty much on par with the entire ‘moving fast’ stuff. They have four pistons and are backed up by regenerative braking, which recycles extra energy back into the battery. Don’t be concerned that all of that speed will be jarring. The completely adjustable suspension acts as a shock absorber, absorbing every bump in the road. The steering system even includes variable steering dampening, which can be adjusted on the fly from the handlebars to ensure the perfect ride.
This thing is built like a tank, with a CNC-machined aluminum frame that keeps the weight to a manageable 110 pounds. It also has an 11-inch broad deck so you can stand your ground, and the stem folds down neatly for simple storage on the go. In addition, the deck and stem are outfitted with RGB LEDs that can be customized to almost any color you like.
Drop this baby in mud and it will still come back; the IP67 classification means it can withstand a splash or even a fast dip in the water and simply shrug it off. The multi-function display shows all of the crucial information, including speed, battery life, and ride mode. There are five different ride modes to choose from, allowing you to customize the whole experience, complete with a new thumb throttle that offers precise control over acceleration. One possible caveat: it costs $3600.
