Volkswagen just confirmed the name for its next major electric SUV and shared a few carefully wrapped prototypes in the process. The ID Tiguan will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 when it reaches showrooms in Europe at the start of 2027, with the United States version following later as a 2028 model. Official debut happens in early October.
This is Volkswagen’s third use of a well-known name in its electric lineup, following the ID Poll and the ID Cross. More than 8.3 million Tiguans have been produced, and the Tiguan and its Tayron cousin sold more over a million last year. The petrol and hybrid models will remain on sale alongside the battery-powered one, giving purchasers a clear choice without forcing them to abandon their previous habits.
Playmobil X Volkswagen T1 Camper

- True-to-original design: Eye-catching two-tone paintwork, realistic details and iconic surfboard - the ideal toy for little beach fans and big VW fans.
- Easy to play with: The roof can be opened for easy access to the interior - ideal for role-playing games or as a decorative highlight on the shelf.
The fresh new electric variant is built on the revised MEB+ platform. The designers have given it a more conventional SUV attitude than the previous ID.4 and ID.5, with a more ‘traditional’ appearance. A slender light bar runs across the front, linking the headlights and positioned directly next to the Volkswagen logo. The teaser photos also show several lower air intakes and little apertures under the lights. The photographs show two possible front treatments: one with a lot more of the body colored in, and another with added black elements to make it look more aggressive.
The electric doors now have pop-out handles instead of the flush form used on earlier electric SUVs. A smooth character line runs the length of the body immediately below the windows, and the lengthy C-pillar gives the vehicle a stretched-out profile. Large wheel arches give it a real SUV appearance. Unlike the ID.4 and ordinary Tiguan, the rear taillights have a plain rectangular design.

Volkswagen has yet to share interior photographs, but all indications are that it will follow the same cabin approach as the ID Poll and ID Cross, with a large center display, some physical buttons to handle the crucial stuff, and a focus on keeping things simple. Space is intended to be similar to the conventional Tiguan, the brand’s best-selling model worldwide.

The battery and motor details are still being kept under wraps, although the existing ID.4 offered packs that did between 263 and 291 miles on the EPA, depending on the model. The new architecture should be capable of supporting larger, more efficient batteries, faster charging, and improved performance in cold temperatures. It’s a good bet that we’ll see single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive models, but actual power and range estimates will have to wait until the full unveiling.

According to Thomas Schaefer, head of the Volkswagen brand, the ID Tiguan is all about carrying the original’s product promise into the electric era, with premium design, plenty of room, straightforward controls, and cutting-edge technology. The company views the word ‘Tiguan’ as a strong brand in and of itself, providing buyers with a clear concept of what to expect. Until the big unveiling in October, the prototypes will be secretly tested. Once the covers are removed, we should have access to the complete technical specifications, prices, and trim levels. For the time being, the Tiguan family has been the best-seller, and the electric version is designed to feel like a natural progression rather than a separate experiment.
