Collectors take notice whenever a Gunther Werks Speedster appears for sale. One of only twenty-five examples built, this deep blue 1995 Porsche 993-based machine carries the name Blue Phoenix and now heads to Mecum’s Monterey auction in August with barely 120 miles on the odometer since completion.
Gunther Werks begins with a classic 911 993 and totally dismantles it, breaking it down to its core before recreating it with a contemporary vision of strength and accuracy. Workers take a sledge to the roof and then completely reinforce the chassis to ensure everything is rock solid. New wide carbon fiber body panels are installed, significantly changing the car’s posture and giving it an instantly recognizable and refreshing appearance.

Exterior elements catch the eye, such as unique projector headlights mounted in forged aluminum housings with Bi-LED beams and daytime running lights that add a touch of high-tech flair. The arches are filled with three-piece forged wheels, with visibly larger ones in the back, and there’s a sophisticated front axle lift mechanism to help clear everyday obstructions. An integrated roll hoop has also been squeezed inside the tonneau cover, providing additional safety without detracting from the open-air feel. Two small storage compartments are hidden beneath the headrests, each containing luggage that has been carefully suited to the available space.

When you open the door, you’ll see the orange interior, which stands out against the blue bodywork. Carbon fibre is used liberally to cover the bucket seats, dashboard, and door panels; the steering wheel is coated in leather with a bright orange stripe at 12 o’clock; sill plates have the “Blue Phoenix” moniker; and door pulls are classic RS-style. Meanwhile, a Porsche Classic Apple CarPlay radio is responsible for keeping your iPhone in sync.

Gunther Werks collaborated with Rothsport Racing in Oregon to design a 4.0-liter flat-six engine for performance. A custom crankshaft, rods, barrels, and Mahle pistons fill the block, while separate throttle bodies and a twin-map Motec ECU feed the engine, which revs all the way up to 7,800 rpm and produces 430 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The power is then routed through a strengthened Getrag G50 six-speed manual transmission to a controlled slip differential with carbon clutches. JRZ coilovers with remote reservoirs manage suspension, while Brembo brakes with red calipers and slotted rotors provide stopping. The total weight is approximately 2,600 pounds.
