Industrial designer Park Saun’s FoldWave portable microwave took home the 2023 Red Dot Award: Design Concept and rightfully so. This compact appliance folds down into a briefcase-sized package and can be setup in minutes when out camping, etc.
FoldWave would work like its wired counterpart where microwaves are produced by an electron tube called a magnetron. These are then reflected within the metal interior of the oven where they are absorbed by food. The radiation cause water molecules in food to vibrate, generating heat that cooks the item placed inside. Technical specifications were not provided, but we assume a rechargeable lithium-ion battery is built directly into the top or bottom of this microwave. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on if we’ll see a functional prototype in the near future.
