Franco Sbarro Alcador is Basically a Ferrari Testarossa Reborn, Now it Could Be Yours

In the mid 80s the Ferrari Testarossa burst onto the scene with its sharp angles, wide stance and side strakes and became the symbol of excess and ambition. Its flat 12 engine and Pininfarina designed body made it the poster car of a generation. But by the early 90s one brave owner looked at this masterpiece and saw something else: a blank canvas. Enter Franco Sbarro, the Swiss designer known for his fearless and boundary pushing creations. The result was the Ferrari Alcador, a one off speedster that transformed the Testarossa into something wilder, weirder and utterly unique. Now this road registered example is for sale in Germany and offers a rare insight into a work of automotive art.

Sbarro did not only modify the Testarossa; he completely redesigned it. The chassis was reduced, but the basic proportions were extended to provide a tighter, more aggressive stance. The boxy features of the Testarossa were replaced by sleek flowing bodywork that resembled a fever dream of 90s design. Curved fenders and rounded edges give the Alcador a softer, more organic shape, while transparent doors (yes, see through panels) add a futuristic touch that foreshadows McLaren’s later speedster designs. Scissor doors, a rarity for Ferrari at the time, swing up with a theatrical flourish and invite you into a cockpit that’s as much sculpture as it is car. Instead of a windshield Sbarro opted for open air, with two thick rollover bars that double as air channels, scooping wind from the headlight openings and funneling it towards the rear. It’s a design choice that prioritizes drama over practicality and dares you to get wet.





Under the bonnet is the Testarossa’s original 4.9 liter flat 12 engine, a 180 degree V12 that produces 385 horsepower. That may not seem much by today’s standards but in 1995 it was enough to make the Alcador a rocket. The engine’s wail, paired with a 5 speed manual gearbox and open gate shifter promises a driving experience that’s raw and mechanical. Sbarro moved the stock gauge cluster to the centre of the dash, a nod to racing cars that keeps the driver’s focus on the road ahead. Oddly the air channels don’t feed the engine but simply exit out the back, a quirky decision that shows Sbarro’s focus on aesthetics over engineering dogma. Every detail, from the moulded seats integrated into the chassis to the minimalist interior feels like a statement: this car isn’t about comfort; it’s about sensation.


Launched in 1995, the Alcador caused a stir at international shows, its polarizing design was a love it or hate it affair. Some angles looked sleek and sexy, others – particularly the rear – looked just plain weird. It’s a car that can’t be defined, beautiful and bizarre in equal measure. Sbarro built three Alcadors but this one is the only road legal one and it has a special status. Registered for road use it’s not just a show car but a car you could in theory drive through city streets, wind in your face as the flat-12 screams behind you. That’s what makes it so cool – a Ferrari that defies the rules, built for someone who wanted to stand out not blend in.



Now for sale through Thiesen Berlin GmbH, the Alcador has a price upon request, fitting for a car this enigmatic. Classic Driver lists the ad with photos that capture its wild spirit. Owning it means owning a piece of automotive history, a moment when one man’s vision and a legendary car collided to create something unique. It’s not just a Testarossa, it’s a Testarossa unbound, a speedster that predicted the open top hypercars of the 2020s while staying true to the unapologetic boldness of its time. For the right buyer it’s a chance to drive a dream – or at least park it in their garage and admire its audacity.
