Honda Prelude-GT GT500
Meet the new Honda Prelude-GT GT500, a purpose built race car to take on the 2026 Super GT competition and beat the likes of the Toyota GR Supra and Nissan Z Nismo in one of the most exciting categories in motorsport. Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) is betting big on this car to rewrite its history when it makes its first test run at Sportsland Sugo on October 1, 2025.

This beast is powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates between 550 and 650 horsepower. Unlike the hybrid system in the road-going Prelude, which combines a 2.0-liter engine with electric motors to produce a meager 200 horsepower, the GT500 lacks a hybrid system and is all pure muscle. Rear wheel drive replaces the street car’s front wheel arrangement, allowing the Prelude GT500 to meet Super GT’s top tier requirements. Details on the transmission and output are being kept under wraps, but expect a setup optimized for lightning fast shifts and constant acceleration.

Honda’s decision to run the Prelude-GT GT500 comes from the troubles of its predecessor, the Civic Type R GT500. Introduced in 2024, the Civic’s four door design hindered its aerodynamics and left it behind the dominant Toyota GR Supra. Masahiro Saeki, HRC’s project leader said that the Prelude’s coupe body provides a blank canvas to pursue “greater aspirations”. Honda sees an opportunity to outmanoeuvre its rivals as the aerodynamic restrictions for Super GT ease in 2026 and the Prelude GT500 is designed to take full advantage of that.

Testing begins at Sportsland Sugo, a track with sharp turns and elevation variations. This shakedown will test the aerodynamics and powertrain. More testing will take place over the winter, before the vehicle makes its race debut at Okayama on April 11-12, 2026. Honda’s engineers are diligent, utilizing their two years of Civic Type R knowledge to bring the Prelude up to speed.
