Bob Maddox has spent years conjuring fire from nothing and creating engines that sound like thunder in a jar. Today, that work has culminated in a two-wheeled machine: a 2005 cruiser bike disassembled and rebuilt with a pulsejet engine mounted low in the frame. The tank only has enough gas to go one mile. Across from him is Voltron Watts, new from Texas, riding an Electric Bike Upgrades bike with a sleek aluminum frame that promises silent speed.
Maddox starts his pulsejet by jamming a leaf blower into the intake, filling the chamber with 87-octane fuel and igniting it. The engine roars to life, 108 detonations per second, each a small bomb propelling air backwards and the bike ahead. Power comes in waves, no pistons or turbines to smooth it out—just raw, stuttering power that hits like a pulse on steroids.
