A 2017 Nissan GT-R with 1,650 horsepower to the wheels has transformed the well-known Godzilla into a wild beast on public roads. This significantly tuned R35 recently appeared in a brief video from Dragy Motorsports, and a look at the data panel shows that the car absolutely rockets, traveling from 60 to 130 mph in just 3.11 seconds and from 100 to 150 mph in a whopping 2.59 seconds. That kind of roll-on acceleration would cast a long shadow over certain modern hypercars, despite the GT-R’s limited factory output at launch.
These crazy results are powered by a fully built version of the dependable old VR38DETT 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6. An engine that has undergone considerable internal improvements to prevent it from self-destructing under the strain of increased boost and power. It runs on high-octane E99 ethanol, which boosts power while still keeping engine temperatures under control when driven hard. The dyno reading of 1650 “real world” horsepower at the wheels has been validated, indicating that the engine produces 1650 horsepower as measured at the wheels rather than the crankshaft.

We don’t have a detailed breakdown of the parts on the project, but the kinds of modifications you’d expect to see on a build like this include stronger pistons, rods, and bearings, as well as a thoroughly blueprinted assembly designed for optimal reliability. The stock turbos are replaced with much larger ones, which drive massive amounts of air through a beefed-up intercooler system. High-flow injectors, as well as a few additional fuel pumps and strengthened fuel lines, are installed to keep the E99 flowing when it’s most required. With all of the horsepower, you’d expect the transmission to be overhauled as well, with stronger gears, clutches, and shafts installed to withstand the abuse of this high-power mount without breaking down.
The reason owners and tuners continue to push GT-Rs to their limits is simple: the platform reacts extremely well to tweaking. The all-wheel-drive system simply pulls the rear end off the line and effectively applies power even when launching from a patchy or otherwise poor terrain. To put it another way, when you have this much power coming on, especially in those ripping mid-range pulls, the traction control and torque management keep the car firmly planted on the road. This particular model serves as a reminder that the R35 chassis remains a seriously powerful package even years after production has halted.
