Based on the Volvo XC90 platform, the 2024 Polestar 3 electric SUV is ready to take on the Tesla Model X / Y. Priced from $83,900 USD in the US, the base R1S model comes equipped with a dual motor setup that makes 483 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to hit 62 mph in 5-seconds, while topping out at 130 mph. On a full charge you can expect a 379-mile range.
There’s just one caveat to its powertrain, the battery can only be charged at 250 kW, which is considerably slower than what the Porsche Taycan EV (360kW) can charge at. What will really set this EV apart from the competition is the Pilot Pack with LiDAR from Luminar, which will be avilable in Q2 2023. This package adds an additional control unit from NVIDIA, three cameras, four ultrasonic sensors and cleaning for the front- and rear-view cameras, to provide accurate real-time data about the car’s surroundings especially in the long-range field. This in turn enables enhanced 3D scanning of the car’s surroundings in greater detail and helps prepare the car for autonomous driving. The first batch of vehicles will be built in Volvo’s Chengdu factory and ship to customers in late 2023.
