Toyota GR Prius 2027 Rumors
Japanese magazines have started circulating fresh reports that Toyota is seriously considering a Gazoo Racing version of the current Prius. The talk centers on a possible reveal at the Tokyo Auto Salon in mid-January 2027, and the timing feels deliberate. Sales of the fifth-generation car have softened noticeably in key markets, including a sharp drop in the United States, raising questions about how much longer this generation will continue in its present form. A hotter Prius wearing GR or GR Sport badges would give the model a memorable final chapter if those questions turn into an actual phase-out.

The concept is not new; Toyota experimented with it not long ago when they debuted a somewhat wild display car to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition stretched out the standard hybrid hatch, adding a carbon-fiber hood and roof, front canards, a low front splitter, extended side skirts, wheel spats with cooling vents out the back, a large rear spoiler, and a prominent diffuser. The majority of the aerodynamic elements came directly from Toyota’s GR010 Hybrid endurance racer. The thing employed the same old 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain, but the visual message was clear: the Prius body can definitely hang with serious race hardware and still look good.

According to Best Car and Japanese blogs such as Creative311, Toyota is now seriously considering expanding that concept into a more production-like approach. Whether that’ll be as a full-fledged GR model with a meaningful performance increase or just a more restrained GR Sport package (focused on styling, suspension, and wheels), since either way, it’ll be the first time a “current gen” Prius has even had the Gazoo Racing treatment.

Nobody knows exactly how much power will be available. The most powerful Prius available today is the plug-in hybrid, which combines a 2.0-liter engine with electric motors to provide approximately 220 horsepower and a 0-to-60 mph time of around 6 seconds. Toyota already sells a considerably stronger system in the RAV4 GR Sport, which combines a 2.5-liter engine with plug-in hybrid transmission for 324 horsepower and all-wheel drive, accelerating a heavier SUV to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

If they put that hardware into a lighter Prius, even a detuned one, it would be a real hot-hatch challenger. Or they may stick with the 264 horsepower from the European RAV4 plug-in hybrid, which is still a significant improvement over the car we have today. Nobody has announced which direction they will take, or whether the car will remain front-wheel drive or include all-wheel drive thanks to the electric motors.

Toyota GR Prius 2027 Rumors
In terms of appearance, a production GR Prius would most likely be less aerodynamic than the 2023 Le Mans car. You can bet the design team will still add some wider fenders, a more serious front bumper, side skirts, a modest rear spoiler, distinctive wheels, and a few darker external trim elements to make the car appear rooted and purposeful rather than just ready for a track day. That cosmetic shift alone will distinguish it from any other Prius on the road today.
