Transparent Wood

Transparent wood may not be new, but researchers are continually advancing the material, whether it be scientists at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology or biochemist Nile Red. The latter of whom attempted to fabricate the material a few years ago, but it never really turned out the way he wanted, that is until…now.

As you can see, Nile’s final result exceeded his expectations, although it’s not exactly perfect yet. There are slight imperfections that make it look more like actual wood rather than just a piece of plastic with haze. His next project? A how to video showing everyone how to make their own, should they have the necessary skills.

We have looked at where the light goes, and what happens when it hits the cellulose. Some of the light goes straight through the wood, and makes the material transparent. Some of the light is refracted and scattered at different angles and gives pleasant effects in lighting applications,” said Professor Lars Berglund at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
