When people in London book an UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort, they are sometimes greeted by a Ford Mustang Mach-E instead of the usual vehicle. Wayve and Uber began rolling out these supervised autonomous excursions across the city on September 3, 2026, marking the first time such services have been available in the United Kingdom.
The cars used to test this are all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-Es outfitted with Wayve’s AI driving system and a slew of sensors to keep everything running smoothly. As you get in, you’ll see panels developed by Uber to give you a clear picture of where you’re going, and they’re all in 64 different languages to ensure everyone’s on the same page. As you’d expect, the fare is clearly shown on the app, just like any other Uber journey.

More than 140,000 Londoners have signed up for the app’s Trip Preferences, hoping to be paired with one of these cutting-edge automobiles. The problem is that there are only approximately 15 of them in service right now, which is minuscule in comparison to the 100,000 or so Ubers that you see chugging down London streets every day. If you don’t want to take an autonomous ride, you can decline it before the car arrives.
Something to bear in mind is that there is a fully qualified, Transport for London licensed driver sat alongside you, at least for the time being, because firms haven’t set a timetable for when they’ll phase out safety drivers yet. Wayve’s AV2.0 system, on the other hand, uses artificial intelligence to learn as it goes, relying on real-world experience rather than a pre-programmed map or set of rules. Wayve has been collecting data on London’s roads since 2018, capturing a variety of conditions, including tight corners, heavy traffic, and some very bad weather.
That’s all part of a larger agreement announced in 2024, when Uber made an investment, and they’ll be introducing Wayve-powered vehicles to its network in 12 countries across the world. Later this year, self-driving Nissan Leafs may appear in Tokyo, driven by Wayve’s AI engine and augmented with some fancy NVIDIA hardware for good measure. Uber’s ultimate goal is to have autonomous choices available in up to 15 cities by the end of 2026, and to be the leading player in this market by 2029.
