
Lucid, Nuro, and Uber have joined forces to reveal their robotaxi project at the 2026 CES in Las Vegas. The collaboration begins with the Lucid Gravity electric SUV, which has been adapted specifically for autonomous taxis. Production models are expected to begin shipping from Lucid’s Arizona manufacturing before the end of the year, with a soft launch first in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Outside, the modifications are more subtle but still purposeful. The roof module, known as a ‘halo,’ stores several additional sensors that keep the Gravity’s elegant looks intact. High-resolution cameras, solid-state lidars, and radars are dispersed throughout the car’s body and inside the halo, providing the driver (who will be sitting back and doing nothing) with a 360-degree view of its surroundings. The halo’s LED strips have two purposes: they assist riders in locating their assigned car from a distance and display some essential messages to guide them from arrival to departure.

The interior is all about space, as it can comfortably accommodate up to six people while still leaving enough room for your stuff. Uber really created the in-car UI from scratch for this device; you’ll find interactive panels where you can control the heating, cooling, and audio, as well as call the support team or notify the car to stop if necessary.
One panel in particular stands out because it shows animated images of the road ahead while also portraying neighboring traffic, pedestrians, and obstructions in real time. It also shows you how the car decides whether to halt at a crossroads or merge into the next lane. Nuro is in charge of the autonomous driving on this one, which is rated for level 4 operations in specified locations. They’re employing a rather deep AI model that crunches all of the data and safety rules to keep things operating well, and it’s all powered by Nvidia’s powerful Drive AGX Thor computer chip.

The thing that really sets this robotaxi apart is that the entire autonomous kit is installed at the Lucid plant in Arizona, which is a far more efficient process than having to add all of the components later. The cars are currently being tested in the Bay Area, and the team is using all of the data collected to fine-tune the system and prepare it for commercial launch later this year.

The idea is to deploy thousands of these vehicles over the next few years, with Lucid supplying the efficient electric base model, Nuro handling the driving intelligence, and Uber providing the massive network of users.
