First Look at Ferrari 296 GT Modificata, the Track Car That Skips the Rulebook

Ferrari just rolled out the 296 GT Modificata, a track-only machine built for members of its Club Competizioni GT program. It starts from the 296 GT3 Evo race car but ignores every regulation that normally holds those machines in check. Production stays extremely limited, and every buyer gets two years of access to twelve rounds of private track events at circuits around the world.

Power comes from a big 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that runs entirely on its own, with no hybrid nonsense. Ferrari effectively removed the crankshaft, induction system, intercoolers, turbochargers, fuel system, and exhaust and restored everything, which paid off. They now generate 720 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, which is sent to the back wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and a fancy carbon clutch. All of this adds up to a rather svelte 2,932 pounds. This gives the car a huge edge on Ferrari’s Fiorano test track, beating the GT3 Evo it is based on by three seconds.




The real estate is very similar to the GT3 Evo, but with some extra details to give it a bit more attitude, such as a deeper front section, more aggressive canards, new intakes, and a slightly larger rear wing with those nice endplates off the 499P for a bit more extra downforce and stability. The wheels are 18 inches and shod with slicks, and you may collaborate with Ferrari Design Studio to create your own livery with carbon fiber details.



The interior of the car is as stripped-back and race-focused as you want it to be, with a full roll cage all around, two seats, and a small space for a passenger or teacher. The rest of the space is taken up by racing harnesses, an intercom, a digital instrument cluster, a separate telemetry screen, and all of the trimmings, such as carbon fiber surfaces and some really nice controls on the steering wheel and center console. There’s an optional rear radar that alerts the driver if a faster car approaches from behind, and the upgraded front brake disks, increased air intake, and reworked cooling ducts all work together to maintain the brakes nice and consistent even during extended sessions. Of course, there’s motorsport ABS to keep the car stable and predictable even for inexperienced drivers.



The 296 GT Modificata is only for people who want to drive the car for leisure on non-competitive track days on the Club Competizioni GT calendar. These events take place in Jerez, Misano, Fuji, Indianapolis, Paul Ricard, and Spa-Francorchamps before culminating in the Ferrari Finali Mondiali. There’s no street registration or anything like that; it’s simply an opportunity to get out on the track and enjoy the ride with some manufacturer support thrown in. Not that Ferrari has made it easy to get your hands on one; the pricing has yet to be published, and the car is only available to clients who are already enrolled in the program, so don’t hold your breath. This is simply an opportunity for those people to fully utilize the 296 platform without the constraints imposed by racing restrictions.
