Rosso Fuoco Red Porsche Carrera GT
Rare does not quite cover spotting a Porsche Carrera GT on the street. Only 1,270 left the Leipzig factory between 2003 and 2006. Roughly half of those reached American buyers. Most wear silver, black, or grey. A handful left in factory red. Almost none wear the deep, liquid fire of Ferrari’s Rosso Fuoco. One does, and it is about to cross the block at Mecum Monterey on August 15.

Milton Verret of Austin bought this 2005 Porsche new and already had a garage full of Ferraris. When this Porsche left the factory, it was in a rather subdued hue. After three months, it was sent to Karosserie in Wayne, Pennsylvania, for a comprehensive restoration. When it was returned, it was completely stripped down to the carbon tub and carefully refinished in a unique shade of PPG Rosso Fuoco. Every single panel was repainted, well exceeding what the factory had in mind. Bolts, gaskets, and fittings were all thoroughly inspected to ensure that everything was in working order. As a result, the new paint appears to have been planned all along.

Verret sold the car at auction, setting a new world record, and then bought it back a year later. He’s owned up to seven Carrera GTs throughout the years, but he claims this is the one that slipped away. The odometer now displays 3,471 miles, which is not a lot given how old it is. The black leather upholstery is still in good condition, with only a few slight creases visible. You can still remove the roof panels to let the engine breathe, as the 5.7-liter V10 is a true screamer.

The dry-sump system is a Formula One trick, with ten oil pumps, sodium-cooled valves, and a twin-flow intake. It has 603 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque, which is transferred to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and a two-disc ceramic clutch that requires rigorous driving. Carbon-ceramic discs with six-piston calipers provide stopping power, and an automatic rear wing can reach speeds of more than 70 mph. Yes, the top speed is a decent 205 mph. Aside than swapping the rear spoiler actuators from hydraulic to electric, nothing mechanical has changed.

This vehicle has a VIN of WP0CA29805L001248 and is one of 644 produced for the United States market to date. Then there’s the fact that Lot S74 at Monterey has no reserve price, which usually gives us a clue, but not this time. Recently, low-mileage Carrera GTs have been selling for $2-3.5 million. Earlier this year, an unusual paint job sold for a whopping $6.7 million. What it all boils down to is the color, the history, and the fact that this one has been painstakingly kept to within an inch of its life, all of which place it in a quite exclusive league.
