The new GR Supra has always been a head turner with its sleek design and 6 cylinder engine but this one is a whole different animal. The GR Supra Supercar was unveiled on September 2, 2025 at the Repco Bathurst 1000 launch in Sydney. It’s a race ready car for the Supercars Championship in Australia.
This beast is powered by a 5.2L V8, a more powerful version of the 2UR-GSE engine found in the Lexus LC 500 and RC F. Toyota engineers increased the displacement to meet the Supercars Championship requirements and the result is an engine that howls like a banshee. Without the constraints of road car emissions and noise regulations this engine sings a raw and unfiltered tune. Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley described the sound as “spine-tingling” and early footage of the car in action supports that.

Six of these Supras will race in 2026 with two teams: Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) and Brad Jones Racing (BJR). WAU will run two cars and BJR will run four. This is Toyota’s return to Australian motorsport which started with the 1957 Mobilgas Round Australia Rally. The Supra will make its racing debut in February 2026 but fans won’t have to wait long to see it. The car will make its public debut at the Bathurst 1000 in October 2025 with demonstration laps and displays at other races later this year. Testing has already begun with wind tunnel and dyno sessions to make sure the Supra can compete with the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.
The designers have kept the road car shape, but made it more aggressive. A big rear wing dominates the back with a diffuser that sucks the car into the track. New rocker panels and centre locking race wheels complete the transformation, it’s still a Supra but every curve and angle has been optimized for aerodynamics and downforce.
Toyota is all in on the Supercars Championship. They’ve signed on for at least 5 years which is a long term commitment to Australian motorsport. This is more than just racing, it’s about taking the GR performance brand to new heights. Lessons learned on the track will be applied to future road cars, sharpening the edge of the Supra and other GR models. For the fans, the real treat is seeing and hearing this V8 Supra in action. When it hits Mount Panorama next month it will leave a lasting impression long after the engines stop.
